- Abstract
The focus of this paper is to investigate the presentations of Yoruba cultural beliefs and practices in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The SDGs were conceived in the West and are currently expected to be implemented by the governments of the respective member-nations. However, the ultimate executors of the SDGs are the indigenous people and citizens of the member-nations, and not the government. This indicates a clash of Western values and local practices in the Third World. Consequently, the Yoruba cultural practices in Yoruba Nollywood film-texts could be seen as a setback to the realization of the objectives of the SDGs. Illustratively, instances are confirmed in the extrajudicial brutalization of suspects through military mentality in Agba Awo and Adigun Oga Oga, with impunity. This contravenes SDGs Goal 16 that seeks justice for all. Again, in Tentebo, there is a display of Yoruba poor attitude to and utter disregard for animals, which contradicts Goal 15. Also, SDGs Goal 5 whose target is the elimination of sexist discrimination is ruptured in the film-text S'oko S'oja where women are portrayed as kleptomaniacs and fetishistic prostitutes, hence unworthy of the honor of equality with African men. These attitudes, beliefs, and practices are capable of harming the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria (Africa). Therefore, the United Nations should liberalize the psyche of the culture agents in the respective membernations including Nollywood in Nigeria. This ensures that the right cultural perspectives are communicated to the populace to aid the attainment of the agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals in Africa.
