- Title
Hemingway's "Out of Season" and the Fisher King.
- Authors
Montgomery, Michael P.
- Abstract
Despite its relative obscurity, "Out of Season" marked a critical juncture in Ernest Hemingway's career. The story was his first after losing his manuscripts in 1922, and its architecture of allusion and omission, built around the Arthurian legend of the Fisher King, would prove catalytic for the aspiring young writer for years to come. Unrecognized by most scholars, the allusion at the story's core hinges on a bilingual pun on the word "geld," which sheds light not only on the complexities of the story itself, but on its wider significance in the arc of Hemingway's fiction.
