- Abstract
The study of biology and morphometrics of Callosobruchus chinensis (Linnaeus) was undertaken in the insectary laboratory of Department of Entomology at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture and Technology, Naini, Prayagraj during 2020-2021. The experiments were carried out in the BOD incubator at temperature of 28 ± 20C and relative humidity of 65 to 70%. The life cycle of C. chinensis included four stages egg, grub. Pupae and adult. The data revealed that eggs incubation period in 3-5 days, the grub stage consisted of four instars and its development ranged from 15-26 days, pupation lasted for 7- 10 days, whereas, female adult longevity ranged from 8-12 days, male adult longevity ranged from 7-11 days. The morphometric measurements revealed that the average length and breadth of eggs were 0.64±0.039mm and 0.47±0.052mm respectively. The length and breadth (mm) of four grub instars G1, G2, G3 and G4 were 0.72±0.064 and 0.44±0.028, 1.56±0.064 and 0.90±0.023, 1.87±0.121 and 1.16±0.054, 2.35±0.088 and 1.98±0.063, respectively. The average length and breadth of pupa were 2.94±0.119mm and 2.22±0.060mm. Whereas, the length and breadth (mm) of adult male and female bruchids were 3.09±0.137, 1.92±0.026 and 3.41±0.105, 2.00±0.057 respectively. The total life cycle of C. chinensis ranged from 30-42 days.
