A Student Development Theory to Practice Workshop.

- Abstract
This article describes a workshop designed to introduce Chickering's theory to paraprofessional staff. <BR> An array of theories are available to the practitioner. The one that was chosen by the department was Chickering's often-cited and widely known psychosocial theory of student development, commonly referred to as the seven vectors of student development (Chickering, 1969). This theory was chosen because it is possible to translate each of the vectors into specific, understandable terms that can be demonstrated by concrete student behaviors. Chickering has commented that his book was written to improve practice (Thomas & Chickering, 1984), and he has been characterized as a rare scholar-practitioner who joins theory and practice (Komives, 1984, citing Knefelkamp, 1987).
