- Abstract
An essay is presented on Griko, a Modern Greek dialect used in Southern Italy which consists of ancient Greek, Byzantine Greek, Italian and Mediterranean loan words. Particular focus is given to Griko's status as an endangered language and to attempts to revive it through the use of reverse language shift (RLS) techniques and the promotion of Griko poetry, folklore, and literature. Details on Griko identity and Griko language instruction are also presented.
