An essay is presented on euthanasia. It describes the autobiographical "Apologie" by French surgeon Ambroise Paré, wherein he recalled how in 1536, he witnessed a case of mercy killing. It explains the important implications of Paré's story. Based on the article, physicians Carl Georg Theodor Kortum and Christian Ludwig Mursinna publicly endorsed active euthanasia on terminally ill patients.
