- Abstract
As well as marine atlases, portolans and nautical charts from the late Middle Ages, navigation stories can also provide information on the political rulership of coastlines, and their surrounding marine areas. Based on the accounts of travellers who crossed the western seas of Europe in the fifteenth century, this study analyses how they perceived the maritime thresholds and limits they traversed on board their respective ships, at a time when the notion of maritime borders, as international law has interpreted it in the modern era, was still in gestation.
