- Abstract
At the beginning of the 13th century Livonia underwent fast integration into the European civilisation, at the same time becoming a co-shaper of that civilisation, considering that the intellectual culture of Europe and understanding of religion were still in the process of development. This is proved by a number of historical written sources that reflect the reception of Livonia by Western Europe. An important source in this regard is the compilation of Christian miracles Libri VIII miraculorum by the Cistercian monk Caesarius of Heisterbach (ca. 1180 - ca. 1240), written in 1225-1227. The story of Kaupo, the sovereign of Turaida Livs, admitting the last confession of his servant is of special interest among others in this compilation. This source is also significant because it presents the grounds for the idea of purgatory. Regardless of short presentations in a number of studies, this material has never been fully translated anywhere in the historical literature, analysed in detail and digitalised. This article is the first of the kind in the context of the Baltic and European history and intellectual culture.
