- Abstract
People typically know less about politics than they think. When it comes to extremists, this self-illusion is even greater. In addition, extremists are more susceptible to beliefs that various socioeconomic problems stem from conspiracies, making it difficult to implement formal electoral marketing and government strategies. A probabilistic sample survey of 381 voters measuring the level of extremism and knowledge about certain public policies and the belief in conspiracy theories was applied in three cities in Rio Grande do Sul. We found a positive relationship between more extreme positions and the self-declared level of knowledge on various issues, as well as a positive association between extremism and conspiratorial beliefs. Since extremists are more convinced of their knowledge, it is possible that people with balanced opinions are constantly influenced by decisions made by that group, often burdened by improbable beliefs.
