- Abstract
The article explores the symbolic vocabularies and ritual agency of the Vauderie d'Arras episode of heresy trials and executions in the medieval Christian history of France. The author notes the use of candles, paper mitres, and confessional acts to effect the ritual transformation of accused worshippers of the Devil. Other topics include the role of public punishment and trial sermons, the iconography of death, and the imagery of prayer.
