- Abstract
Objective: World Health Organization (WHO) defines tobacco smoking as the leading preventable cause of diseases. Every year, nearly 7 million people lose their lives due to diseases caused by cigarette smoking in the world. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the frequency of smoking in the primary and secondary school teachers. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed in 2160 primary and secondary school teachers. A questionnaire form was used to question the sociodemographic characteristics and smoking status of the participants. Results: The mean age was 40.5±8.2 years (21-65), 53.7% (n=1160) men, 46.3% (n=1000) women, 89.7% (n=1937) married. Of all the participants, the smoking frequency was 36.7% (n=793). The mean starting age of smoking was 18.2±4.5 years and smoking duration was 18.5±8.5 years in average. The frequency of quit ratio was 28.8%. The smoking frequency was higher in men than women (p<0.001). In this study, 72.2% (n=1560) of teachers stated that they are role models for the society and students with their behaviors in all respects and 94.1% (n=2032) of them support the smoking ban in the closed area. About the prohibition, 62.9% (n=398) of non-smokers and 19.8% (n=98) of smokers wanted to continue the ban and extend the content (p <0.001). Conclusions: In our study, the smoking frequency of teachers working in our region was found to be 36.7%. While giving education to the students about smoking and their damage during their education, parents and teachers should be a good role model for the students by not smoking.
