- Abstract
Assisted reproductive techniques (ART) have developed rapidly in recent years in equine production. The purpose of this review is to mention and discuss the main TRA currently used in horses. In Colombia, are routinely used techniques such as artificial insemination (AI) (using fresh, chilled or cryopreserved semen) and embryo transfer (ET), with the interest of increasing the offspring of certain animals or improving reproductive performance of them. The oocytes transfer (OT) and gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) are used in some countries in mares with reproductive dysfunction; these techniques are less applicable in our country. The production of in vitro embryos, together with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) or cloning by nuclear transfer have been made in equines in basic research, or commercially in some countries with high costs that now, do not represent a tool for the clinical area in the country, but are of great interest for understanding the physiology, reproductive disorders and development in the equine specie.
