- Title
"Asleep and Awake at the Same Time": Sleep Denial among Pullman Porters.
- Authors
Derickson, Alan
- Abstract
This article examines the severe lack of sleep among sleeping car porters at Pullman Co. in an attempt to broaden the scope of historical inquiry into the health of workers in the U.S. Porters work for extremely long hours during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Examining this group of workers helps illuminate the ways in which terms of employment, such as hours and scheduling, constituted real hazards that can inflict physical and psychological damage. These employees and their union leaders are aware of the risks posed by inadequate and disrupted rest.
