- Abstract
This article provides an introduction to a special issue that explores the evolving landscape of sexual knowledge in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, highlighting the diverse methodologies and rich scholarship that have emerged around this subject. Despite the lack of consensus among historians on how to narrate the history of sexual knowledge, significant contributions have been made in areas such as sexology, psychoanalysis, and the impact of women's roles in early twentieth-century developments. Furthermore, the article underscores the importance of considering the transnational, cross-cultural, and interdisciplinary dimensions of sexual science, as well as the dynamic interactions between professional and lay understandings of sex, particularly through sexual guidance literature.
