The article examines how tradition and development in the English arts of the World War I depicts the stress on social continuity and on English pastoral idea in its idea and simple, traditional form. Topics addressed include poems representative of such ideals, the features of artistic responses to the war, and perpetuation of the class system as a feature of literary response of the period.
