This article rebuts the widespread argument that the new program of Medicare catastrophic benefits is financed inequitably at the expense of high income Medicare enrollees who must pay a supplemental premium related to their income tax liability. Those who so complain ignore the fact of the substantial tax free subsidy that they receive from the Treasury with respect to the noncatastrophic benefits of Medicare.
