Abstract
The article discusses the California common law and Mexican law from 1850 to 1879. Topics discussed include civil governor, General Bennet Riley's appointments for judicial posts under the Mexican government, highlights of Governor Peter H. Burnett's first annual message as chief justice on December 21, 1849, lack of familiarity with the civil law in Mexican California and the Common Law of England as the rule of decision in all courts of the state.
