- Title
Limits of the Diaphane: Refl ections on Visuality as a Modality of the Narcissistic Drive.
- Abstract
The article explores the influence of narcissism in visual art. It notes that the use of unconscious representation or applied psychoanalysis in the aesthetic allows artists to focus on their repressed symbolic contents. Modernist art critic Michael Fried cites the critical role of the right-angle mirror in the work of Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Also discussed is the association of unpresentable with Judaic taboo on images of the divine.
