- Abstract
The present article intends to analyze the construction of the main character, Constance, of the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover (1928), by D.H. Lawrence, and her translation into screen in 1981, by the director Just Jaeckin in order to verify the director's choices to deal with the literary universe of the novel in the screen. In order to do so, we will observe traces of the character's construction and her attitudes as a subject who reacts to the social constraints. Starting from the description of excepts from the novel and scenes from the movie, we will show the main differences between the texts, taking into account social and historical aspects of the production and reception contexts of both works. As theoretical background, questions about the construction of fictional characters (CANDIDO, 2011), and principles of film adaptation (CATRYSSE, 1992) will be discussed. The results have shown that, although the movie focuses on the polemic aspects of the book, it does not follow its innovative tendency, as the way Lawrence presents themes.
