- Abstract
This article responds to articles, written by Rosaire Langlois and Jack Goldstone, critical of "The West and the Rest Revisited" a piece printed in this journal in 2006. The author maintains that the cultural differences between Western Europe and other early modern political systems account for the European emergence as a colonial and industrial power. The significance of intellectual and cultural development in the West for its political and economic rise to world domination is described. The difficulty of comparative statistical analysis of economic conditions before 1800 is noted. The significance of military tactics and mercantile strategies developed by the Westerners in their colonial efforts is outlined.
