- Abstract
The article focuses on Japanese pharmaceutical companies that has broadened its investment focus in early-stage foreign biotech ventures. The trend reflects growing recognition of the potential that foreign biotech R&D can supplement dwindling drug pipelines and signals a bolder investment strategy on the part of traditionally risk-averse Japanese firms. 70% of all new drugs on the Japanese market are of foreign origin, according to a study by the Japan External Trade Organization. Investment in foreign biotech through more traditional channels, such as licensing or R&D deals, is also on the upswing.
