- Abstract
The article focuses on the contribution of women religious to rural communities in Australia. It highlights the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the diocese of Bathurst and the presence of the Discalced Nuns of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, which are called the Carmelites nuns, in the diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes. It provides an insight into the contribution made by other religious congregations throughout rural Australia. It stresses that thousands of women religious have lived, worked and ministered in every state of Australia to a variety of needs and serving the rich mixture of the Australian population from the arrival in Sydney of the first Sisters of Charity in 1838 to the present day.
