- Authors

- Abstract
This article is based on research of court records relating to the northern backlands of the Brazilian province of Goiás, from 1870 to 1900. It aims to highlight the meaning of the entrance of judiciary and administrative provisions, materialized in written codes and laws, in an open frontier territory. More specifically, we analyze one homicide case file and two probate inventories linked to the history of land occupation, cattle theft and rivalries between established settlers and newcomers, the latter represented in this story by the descendants of the Canguçu family, originally from eighteenth-century Bahia.
