- Abstract
Based on new information obtained from the Archives of the German Foreign Office and the Historical Archives of the Diplomatic Service of Portugal, this article examines the attitudes and actions of the Portuguese Minister Plenipotentiary in Berlin, Alberto da Veiga Simões, re - garding Jewish immigration to Portugal during the Third Reich. The author examines the cases of the Jewish intellectuals Elizabeth and Sigmund Feist and of the Jewish honorary consuls of Portugal in Germany, Gustav Mayer-Alberti and Eduard Lindenthal. Other instances are also documented, e.g. that of the Jewish honorary consul Karl Heumann. An issue that has received thus far little attention from historians is highlighted and addressed here: the demand by the German Foreign Office that all Jewish honorary consuls be dismissed, and Veiga Simões' intricate management of the situation that thus arose. The author demonstrates that in the above cases, Veiga Simões endeavoured to protect and to help notable Jewish personalities, even though by doing so he incurred the displeasure of his superiors and of the German authorities.
