- Abstract
The article features Barkley L. Hendricks, an African American photographer, landscape painter, watercolorist, draftsman, assemblage artist, carpenter, and jazz musician. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1945 and studied art at Yale University. At a young age, he learned to navigate the streets of North Philadelphia but his interests in art, basketball and music had kept him out of trouble. It highlights his life as a student and how his teachers inspired him to maximize his potential as an artist. It also mentions Hendrick's first portrait "My Black Nun."
