Abstract
The article reports that the ongoing financial crisis which resulted in the decline in customer demand has forced chemical companies to close facilities, slow production, shelve construction plans, and lay off staff. The world's largest chemical company BASF has announced a cost-cutting initiative that would cut worldwide output by 25% and reduce the working hours of its employees. Ineos has canceled plans to build four biodiesel plants.
