- Abstract
This article takes as its focus 'nation-urban space' relations as exemplified by the Saint-Jean-Baptiste parade in Montreal, in particular that of 1968. It proposes a reflection on the parade as a key contributor to the construction of national identity, going on to describe how the form and appearance (the iconography) of the parade marching in urban space allow the various groups concerned to explore their relationship to the social, political, cultural and material spaces in which they are evolving as a nation.
