- Abstract
The article discusses the significance of Potamogeton natans as intermediate and final endpoints in mesocosm effect studies. Indoor digital photos of floating leaves of Potamogeton natans were subjected to image analysis and then compared to wet weight and ash-free weight endpoints at the end of the experiment. It was found that both number and area of floating leaves indicated the same herbicide effects as wet weight and ash-free dry weight of P. natans. However, area of floating leaves of P. natans was highly correlated to wet weight of P. natans indicating that area of floating leaves is the most reasonable endpoint in freshwater mesocosm studies on the effects of herbicides. Field application of the method used in the study is recommended.
