Writing in the Age of Technology: Using Digital Tools to Enhance Elementary Composition Instruction.

- Abstract
John Dewey advocated for the inclusion of creative play as a cornerstone of elementary education. Yet with ever-growing demands on classroom time--from mastering "the basics" to integrating technology into all aspects of the curriculum--chances to foster creativity can be few and far between. The teaching of writing, then, becomes even more essential because it uniquely provides students an outlet for self-expression and self-exploration. This article discusses ways in which elementary writing teachers may look to advancements in digital literacy which allow students to connect with others, both globally and at home, in meaningful ways. Classroom technology can facilitate authentic learning experiences, provide boundless opportunities to express creativity, and foster intrinsic interest in learning. By embracing the current necessity to teach children to read, write, navigate, and engage with computers and the Internet with automaticity, educators can broaden the scope of writing instruction and continually link back to the students' true, creative selves.
