- Title
Nicholas Bujalski Wins the Third Annual Levin Article Prize.
- Abstract
Nicholas Bujalski has won the third annual Levin Article Prize for his article titled "'Tuk, tuk, tuk!' A History of Russia's Prison Knocking Language." The article explores how prisoners in the Peter and Paul Fortress communicated with knocks and taps, using this tapped language as a form of storytelling, poetry, and games. Bujalski's analysis challenges the notion of prisons as purely institutional spaces and instead presents them as contested ground open to interpretation. Bujalski is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at Oberlin College and is working on a book about the Peter and Paul Fortress.
