Ten simple rules for teaching an introduction to R.
- Authors
Hoffman, Ava M.; Wright, Carrie
- Abstract
This article provides ten rules for teaching an introduction to the R programming language. The authors suggest intensive courses to improve learning outcomes and team teaching to provide a broader range of skills and support. They recommend teaching reproducibly using dynamic documents and prioritizing intuition over memorization. Live coding and lab time are highlighted as valuable, as well as ending the course with a project for practical application. The authors also suggest using classroom surveys and feedback to understand learners' backgrounds and interests. They recommend committing to either the Tidyverse ecosystem or base R from the beginning and starting with data wrangling and basic statistics. Common pitfalls and solutions are provided, and instructors are encouraged to continuously improve their teaching methods and explore additional resources.
