- Title
‘Blue is the Pervading Shade’: Re-examining British Film Censorship in the 1970s.
- Authors
Barber, Sian
- Abstract
The article presents a study of British censorship and film culture in the 1970s. It shows how varied management styles and value judgements in the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) officers like John Trevelyan and James Ferman can affect the censorship policies but its dependence on public opinion and lack of written policy cause it to be misrepresented and misunderstood. It mentions that the Board has made genuine efforts to provide high standards, integrity and cultural value to changing times by close collaboration with the industry.
