- Abstract
This article focuses on the project of IDC Publishers to publish on microfiche the art sales catalogues collected by Frits Lugt. In the early 20th century Lugt recognized fully the importance of art sales catalogues for art historical research. His compilation, Répertoire des catalogues de ventes publiques intéressant l'art ou la curiosité, appeared between 1938 and 1987. In 1987 IDC released the first part of the Art sales catalogues microfiche collection covering the period 1600-1825, based on the first volume of Lugt's Répertoire. In the years that followed IDC supplemented the 1600-1825 collection with catalogues from other Dutch and British libraries. During the filming, IDC encountered many art sales catalogues that were not described in Lugt's collection. To create a coherent unity IDC decided to describe these catalogues in the same way as Lugt would have done, that is, in the French language and using the same abbreviations as he did. Printing the work online has made it possible for IDC to present itself as a medium-independent publisher in this field.
