- Abstract
In this study, ethyl acetate, ethanol and chloroform extracts obtained from Teucrium chamaedrys L. subsp. chamaedrys L. (Lamiaceae) collected from Duzce province were investigated by disc diffusion method in order to examine their antimicrobial activities against Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, Proteus vulgaris, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis as bacterial cultures and Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Kluyveromyces marxianus, Cryptococcus neoformans and Debaryomyces hansenii as the yeast cultures. While, the highest antibacterial activity was measured against S. aureus (14 mm) bacteria in the ethanol extract, the highest antifungal activity was measured against the yeast culture of K. marxianus (17 mm) in ethanol extract. Besides, chemical characterization of the plant was investigated by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) technique. Our findings support the suitability of the plant as a medicine against microbial infections among the public.
