- Abstract
Periodontal disease often leads to the bone breakdown. Various modalities have been used to regenerate bone damage in periodontitis, one of them is the usage of bone graft. There are several types of bone graft, one of which is xenograft. Fish bones have thepotential to be used as a bone graft because of their organic and inorganic contents which are similar to human bones and teeth. One of the fish that has biomedical potential is snakehead fish, instead of its flesh,the usage of its bonescan be increasedas an alternative in periodontal regenerative therapy.To improve the quality of using snakehead fish as bone graft material, fish bones are soaked in citric acid and made in the form of gelatin.In regenerative therapy, bone remodeling is characterized by the formation of osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is the mostabundant protein matrix found in bone which can be detected through immunohistochemical examinations.Objective:to measure the effectiveness bone graft of snakehead fish bones (channa striata) in the gelatin form on the osteocalcin (ocn) expressions.Material and Methods: This study used a true experimental study with post test only control group design. This study used three treatment groups were the test group using gelatin haruan fish bone, positive control group using a sintetic bone graft and a negative control group using aquades. Results:The Mann Whitney test was performed to determine the differences of osteocalcin expression between tested and control groups on the day 14th and 21st. The results on the day 14th and 21st showed that there was a significant differences between tested group and negative control group (p <0.001). Conclusion: The bone graft of snakehead fish bones in the gelatin form can increase expression of osteocalcin.
