- Abstract
Marine pollution caused by the disposal or accumulation of waste and toxic substances is a serious environmental problem. Munition from the world wars, lost in action or dumped deliberately, still lies on the sea floor. In recent years, moreover, plastics in the ocean have attracted considerable attention. Tiny fragments or »microplastics« insinuate themselves into marine ecosystems, being harmful in themselves as well as transporting other chemicals. The contamination of the marine environment by pollutants is a gradual and slow process, and its effects are not yet fully understood or predictable. Both microplastics and underwater munitions are characterised by a specific persistence, temporality and interaction to the marine environment. However, a comparison of the two types of marine debris reveals a very different way of problematising them. While war remnants have received less publicity, their existence has been known and managed for decades. In contrast, the current problematisation of plastic waste is morally charged and individualised, being framed as a question of consumer choice rather than production.
