- Abstract
The bridge of Torre Oglio (Province of Mantua) is one of the last pontoon bridges still in use in northern Italy and in 2026 it will be one century old. It withstood the ravages of time and the bombings during the Second World War, has always been of great importance for vehicular transit and continues to play a fundamental role in connecting the inhabited areas situated on the two opposite banks of the River Oglio. Due to its originality and location, this bridge has become famous, amongst other things, for having been the set of some well-known movie scenes. The close association between the physical characteristics of the natural environment and this artefact is illustrated, taking into account, on the one hand, the geomorphological and hydraulic aspects of the confluence between the rivers Oglio and Po, near which the bridge is located, and on the other hand the historical events, starting from its original construction with the subsequent restorations that have made it unique also from a technical standpoint, since it has now become more like a floating machine.
