- Title
Conservation status and needs of butterflies (Lepidoptera) on the Torres Strait Islands.

- Abstract
The geographical affinities of the butterfly fauna of the islands of Torres Strait are outlined. The region forms a complex area of transition between New Guinea and Australia, and several taxa are not yet known from either adjacent mainland. Lack of published biological and distributional data renders it difficult to allocate any such taxon to a conservation status other than ‘Data Deficient’, but current threats related to human land uses and the likely sea level rises from future climate change emphasise the need for conservation planning. Complex systems of land tenure and difficulties of effective monitoring impinge on the establishment of effective reserves in the region.
