James E. Womack, a renowned scientist and pioneer in genomics, passed away at the age of 82. Throughout his career, Womack made significant contributions to the field of comparative mammalian genetics, including the development of the first comparative synteny map of the cattle genome. He also played a key role in the sequencing of the bovine genome. Womack published over 380 scientific publications and trained numerous graduate and postdoctoral students. His dedication to teaching and mentoring extended beyond cattle and agriculture, and he emphasized the importance of using humans as models for genetic analysis in other animals. Womack's transformative research was recognized with numerous awards, and he served in leadership roles in various scientific organizations.
