This article aims at reconstructing various concepts of semantic pejoration in German and French linguistics in the 19th and early 20th century. The analysis of standard linguistic works of that time as well as of selected publications on meaning change shows that the socio-historical and epistemic context had a major impact on the development of the concept of pejoration during this period.
