- Abstract
This article presents a profile the Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Columbia, South Carolina. Greg Hamilton is the owner and manager of Hickory Ridge. For Hamilton, the purchase of Hickory Ridge was an important step in fulfilling a lifelong dream to own and run a public golf course. Hickory Ridge opened in 1957 as an 18-hole, par-71 golf course. It was built on a modest budget by the Williams family, who owned the land. The Williams family operated the course for less than a decade before selling it in 1964. Following several ownership changes over the next 15 years, the McAllister family bought the course in 1978. Almost immediately, the McAllisters, who were in the construction business, cut the golf course to nine holes and built a housing development on what had been the back nine. The McAllisters invested minimal amounts of money in maintaining the course, and gradually it fell into the dilapidated state in which Hamilton found it in 1988. At the time of Hamilton's purchase, there was little reason to believe that Hickory Ridge had ever been a pleasant, well-kept golf course. Hamilton's refurbishing encompassed the course's buildings, equipment and grounds. Hamilton also took action to ensure that the course met the needs and preferences of its customers.
