- Abstract
Time-resolved spectroscopy of molecular photochemistry is an important tool for studying photochemical processes and developing efficient photoswitchable materials. Ultrashort laser pulses enable the creation of stroboscopic images of molecular films. X-rays expand the capabilities of time-resolved spectroscopy and allow for the direct observation of conical intersections (CIs), which influence the course and outcome of photochemical processes. Modern quantum chemical methods and powerful computers have shown that CIs are present in almost every molecule, but many of their properties and effects on the formation of photochemical products remain unclear. Time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction offer new opportunities for designing applications in photocatalysis, photopharmacology, and optoelectronics.
