- Title
U.S. EPA Voluntary Guidelines for Septic-System Management.
- Abstract
Failing and improperly managed septic systems are a source of water pollution, potentially causing contamination of drinking water wells or restricting shellfish harvest. Septic systems serve approximately 25 percent of U.S. households, and one in three new homes built today use these system. The Voluntary Guidelines for Management of Onsite and Clustered Wastewater Treatment Systems are designed to help local governments strengthen their management of septic systems and other small, privately owned wastewater treatment systems. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been working to help local governments build better septic-system management programs. Recently, the agency released a CD-based outreach kit to assist communities in their efforts to educate citizens about proper septic-system management.
