- Abstract
An essay is presented on the lumber enterprise of the Israelite House of David, a religious commune, on High Island in Michigan from 1912 to 1928. It comments on life on High Island, including housing, meals, and recreation. The author considers allegations concerning the sexual behavior of House of David leader Benjamin Purnell, legal disputes between the state of Michigan and the commune, and the commune's ships the Rising Sun and the Rosabelle.
