- Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate parents/guardians' knowledge about herpes virus types 1 and 2 infection. A semi-structured script was applied in a health unit in Belford Roxo/RJ for the research, between March and December 2016. The sample consisted of 140 individuals (121 women and 19 men). Of these, 13 (9.3%) reported having the infection, 11 women and 2 men. A total of 66 (47.1%) showed lack of knowledge regarding transmitted infections. According to the parents' report, 6 (4.3%) children presented episodes of the infection, of these, 5 (3.6%) parents could not inform how the child acquired the virus. Three mothers acquired herpes virus infection during pregnancy. Approximately 50% of this group was unaware of how these infections are transmitted, and reported a concern about complications, especially related to children. We concluded that the fragility of knowledge and/or improper practices can postpone early diagnosis, which may hinder the treatment and prevention of complications. There is a need for wide dissemination of information about these infections to the population.
