- Abstract
The article looks at the depiction of childhood in Victorian art. Particular focus is given to the artwork of painters John Everett Millais, Frederick Daniel Hardy, and Arthur Boyd Houghton. According to the author, children of both the lower and middle classes were viewed as corruptible and possibly malevolent rather than innocent. Details on the roles of comedy and poignancy in Victorian art featuring children are presented. Topics discussed include genre painting, morality, depictions of children's play, and the physical idealization of children.
