- Authors

- Abstract
Funeral rites are among the oldest known rituals to man. Funeral orations began in the ancient times and have become part of the burial rites in many societies all around the world. More than any other activity associated with burials, funeral orations highlight the personal characteristics of the deceased and serve as a means of reinforcing social bonds and status. The context of orations compels the speaker to ensure the effectiveness of his/her speech by deploying appropriate communicative strategies, some of which may be identified as pragmatic features. The principal purpose of this study therefore is to carry out a comparative pragmatic analysis of two selected funeral orations presented in British and Nigerian settings. This study attempts to analyse the types of speech acts present in the funeral orations using the categorisation of speech acts by Allan (1986).
