- Abstract
A leaf spot disease caused by Bipolaris oryzae was observed on banana plants in three orchards in Hainan, China. The disease resulted in brown streaks on the leaves that expanded into ovoid or lens-shaped lesions with a white or grey center surrounded by a brown border and yellowish-green halo. Isolates of B. oryzae were obtained from infected leaves and their morphological characteristics matched the description of Bipolaris spp. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that the isolates were B. oryzae, and DNA sequencing showed a high level of identity to the ex-type strain of B. oryzae. This is the first report of B. oryzae on banana in China and worldwide, posing a risk to cultivated bananas.
