- Title
Beyond the “Atlantic World”: Early American History as Viewed from the West.
- Authors
Barr, Juliana
- Abstract
The article looks at the study of the American West as part of the discipline of colonial American history. According to the author, historians' framing of colonial America as part of a larger Atlantic world ignores the experiences of Indians in the American West and Southwest. It is suggested that early American history should instead be framed using a continental approach. Details related to Spanish settler colonialism in North America are presented. Other topics include borderlands and Native American interaction with French and Spanish settlers.
