- Title
Naming Balboa Park: Correcting the Record.
- Authors
Carter, Nancy Carol
- Abstract
The article explores the history of the naming of Balboa Park in San Diego, California. The author reflects on the popular narrative that the park was named in a citywide contest in 1910 and the selection of a name by the Park Commission. Emphasis is given to the participation of the newspaper the "San Diego Sun" in promoting public interest in the name selection process. It is suggested that the naming of the park occurred to coincide with the opening of the Panama-California Exposition in 1915. Other topics include easy pronunciation of place names, letters to the editor, and Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa.
